County Treasurer Warns of Scam

All:  This is an issue we are encountering in Montgomery County.  An individual claiming to be from the Department of Justice contacted our Juvenile Courts about a grant application they have submitted and requested our county’s banking information.  Luckily the county employee was suspicious and didn’t give out the info and contacted us and we contacted the US Secret Service because this wasn’t the first odd call like this received in recent months.  Somehow this individual had obtained a copy of the grant application so they knew info on that document that they would not have just made up.  Secret Service advised us that they have seen this ploy targeted against government agencies so they recommended we reach out to all county employees and state agencies as well as my fellow county treasurers to put everyone on the alert.

As you can see in the message below, our message directed anyone who encountered a request like this to contact my Director of Finance and Investments, but each county could customize this to the appropriate individual (County Treasurer or their designate) in your county.

Just want to spread the word so no one falls for these criminal tactics!

Dear Colleagues –

It has come to our attention there is an attempt to get banking information such as bank routing numbers and account numbers from various government offices by asking for “verification” of those numbers.  It seems that these fraudsters have gotten hold of legitimate grant applications and are asking government offices to “verify” the information or they run the risk of not receiving grant funds

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD BANKING INFORMATION SUCH AS ACCOUNT NUMBERS AND /OR ROUTING NUMBERS, OR  COUNTY FINANCIAL INFORMATION BE GIVEN TO ANYONE.

All banking-related requests should be directed to:

                                           Judith A. Zimmerman
Director, Finance&Investments
Montgomery County Treasurer’s Office
451 West Third Street – 2nd floor
Dayton, OH 45422

This matter has been referred to the United States Secret Service.
